Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet format of the previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album was indicative of the maturation of group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's improved virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard playing was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on earlier efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live show which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed shortly after, and the group went on a world-wide tour to promote the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demos and tapes in search of a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the first album in the band's history not to include any single song that had the word "A" in its title and it included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis which hampered his singing. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes and the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally reforming the band. This lineup, minus Howe (who was busy with Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
