World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to items can be used to increase the stats of a particular item. Based on the type of upgrade it could increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.
Upgrades to equipment in The War Within requires a certain number of Flightstones and Crests and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specific amount.
Item Level
When an item is upgraded, its basic stats increase in value. This is the sum of an item upgrader mod's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrading items can be expensive, depending on the upgrader and what type of upgrade you choose to make. This is due to the fact that many perks must be replaced in order for the item to be upgraded.
Item level is a popular measurement of power and is visible on all item tooltips. It also serves to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear as PvP is restricted at a lower level. Players can see their average item level in their character sheet.
Utilizing the level of an item can help players evaluate the strength of equipment when choosing to buy or sell. It's an excellent gauge of an item's worth and the amount of damage it is capable of dealing with. Comparing items in the inventory of a vendor can be done by using the item's level.
The level of the item can be checked by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the item's full description, including ilvl. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat.
There are a variety of theories on the method by which the level of an item upgrader mod is determined. One theory suggests that the level of an item is calculated using formulas that determine the value of an item's stats actually are. It takes into account the fact that different perks have different values, and also that gems in sockets add to the overall value of the item. This process could result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl which is typically close to Blizzard's real item level.
This isn't the only factor that influences the value of an item. The degree of the area in which the item dropped can also change its stats. For example it can increase the item's haste or crit score. Items dropped in higher-level instances will have a higher ilvl.
Item Stats
The stats of an item are a major part of what determines the value of an item for players. The game uses a lot of them in various ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the best." The base stats of a weapon are boosted by the weapon's stat modification that are in turn increased by the player's skill.
Upgrades to an item may increase the stats of an item. The rarity of an item determines the cost of upgrading. A white or grey item for instance, will only be upgraded once, while an item that has rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at higher prices.
Affixes can also be used to alter the stats of an item. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player, and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The affixes could do things like give the item extra damage, or add a unique capability to the item (such as reviving dead or cutting down the cooldowns), or make the item unique by adding an exclusive name to the item.
All affixes are currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade window, pressing the green button. It will cost a set amount in gold and items. These can be used as upgrade gauges, similar to other methods of rerolling.
Players can upgrade an item with a specific stat, or reroll the affixes. The range of stats is determined by the item's level. However each item will include at least one stat in the same range, unless it's an item that is unique or the item is a God Roll from a boss in a raid.
Another thing that could be altered by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without rerolling the affixes, or selecting which stats to increase. Like base equipment, it would have to be done per item, and the item comparison interface wouldn't display all possible stats simultaneously.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the chances of finding items and the properties that are spawned from loot drops and the intensity of these properties. However, it does not directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It simply gives the player a chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game, and is therefore more beneficial in the initial game run as opposed to later ones, because most players value greater weapon scaling and defense over the raw damage gain.
In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each level of the item. These can also be increased by using anti-materials like a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
Weapons, armor, and shields can be created or spawned using the Luck property, which has an initial value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to give +40 Luck or to increase the Luck of an item, up to 140.
Certain items, like the weapon with Hollow-infused components can also be crafted to increase the damage of any ability that deals damage by five percent. These items are available at the store or crafted using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to increase the success rate of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their item in the event that it fails.
When you upgrade an item, the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of completing the upgrade successfully, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The percentage of success can only be increased so much, and the likelihood that an upgrade will fail can't exceed 100%.
The Luck of an item upgrading can also influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. Each item has a base success rate of 25% and each item with Luck increases that chance by 5percent.
The item upgrade overlays are displayed above items in the inventory. This can cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the item upgrader (click) CORE client config.
