Mitsubishi-Motors-New.pngCharles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different connector pins, and they serve different purposes however the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. 2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I don't know what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor audikey (source website) (G28). If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially if they're a Bosch model like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be an option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi a1 key replacement because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those two pins. This part is common across the new audi keys 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 DU You may also find good ones in wrecking yards.
