The ability to upgrade items allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear with new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item or giving additional benefits. To upgrade an item, the player needs to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.

Typically items that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, while items with strong bases such as eth titans do not vary in their stats following being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons trinkets, weapons and gathering tools. They give you an attribute benefit, or additional effect, when the equipment is being used. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They add a suffix to the end of the item's name. For instance adding the suffix Glyph could transform a Staff wrapping of Minor Vigor into a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.

If the player upgrades their gathering tool, and then replaces the glyphs with a different one the old one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace another upgrade component the item will be destroyed, with the exception for the inscriptions that can be swapped freely.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system is different from previous versions in some important ways. Gear is now broken down into tracks and items can be upgraded a set number of times before being "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, however the materials required for upgrades do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a few items and maximize the effect of those items, instead of spreading upgrade costs over multiple pieces.

Engineers will employ a level to compare the height of the building against an established location, such as the benchmark. This is known as a "level loop." It involves taking readings with the level, backsighting rod and then turning the level to take the foresighting rod reading. This method ensures that the buildings are constructed with a high degree of precision and security.

Rerolling

Rerolling is the process of altering the upgrade components of an item. It is a very important part of the game, and it can increase the damage, strength or other attributes.
